What’s my most effective tip?

What’s my most effective tip?

I skied recently with a group of lovely ladies out in Tignes Le Lac, France.  All of whom admitted that their main challenge when skiing was their lack of confidence.

They asked me for my best tip – so I gave it to them…

BREATHE I said!

Really? They said

REALLY! I said.

Believe me – this simple tip can and will make a massive difference to your confidence and your skiing.

How?

The answer is that breathing affects your body and mind on many, many different levels.

The most obvious effect is that breathing delivers the necessary oxygen to your muscles; organs and brain to maintain life!   Skiing is an aerobic sport which demands a constant oxygen supply over a long period of time.  Without oxygen, your muscles simply cannot work efficiently and effectively for long.

But another, more subtle effect of breathing is its effect on your nervous system.  Deep breathing uses the diaphragm which is close to the Vagus nerve which supplies three quarters of the parasympathetic nerve fibres to the rest of the body and these are responsible for your body’s ability to recuperate and return to a balanced state after being fearful or stressed.

Putting that in layman’s terms, deep breathing sends the signals to your brain that everything is ok and that you can relax.

So – does it work?  Yes, absolutely.  The challenge is to remember to breathe!  When you are fearful or stressed, the normal pattern is often to hold your breath.  In fact one of the group said exactly this – ‘It works!  The thing is I keep forgetting to breathe!’

I explained that what I suggest people to do is breathe consciously.  And doing anything consciously means you have to think about it and remember to do it until it becomes habitual or an unconscious pattern.

So be assured that whilst my tips do repeatedly remind you to BREATHE – they also give some great ideas to help you remember to do it!

You can only think one thought at a time

You can only think one thought at a time

Yesterday I took a trip over to The Chill Factor near Manchester, UK with a client of mine who hadn’t been skiing for 6 years because she had lost her confidence on the slopes.  She’s now booked to go on a family holiday over the New Year and was dreading it!  In fact, when I suggested we have a couple of hours on the indoor slope it took all her courage to say yes!

As you can imagine, the first run down after six years off was tense!  But she did it!  Then we started on re-building her confidence.  ’What’s your goal for the session?’ I asked.  ’To have a run without panicking’ she answered.  A great goal in many ways, but not so good in others.

A goal really needs to fulfil the 3 P’s – Present, Personal and Positive – well, as the song says, two out of three ain’t bad!  But I needed her to have a POSITIVE aim for our session so her goal became ‘To ski down relaxed and happy and having FUN!’  Now there’s a great goal!!!

Over the next few runs I gave her a few of my simple tips to work on from focussing on what her feet were doing inside her boots to bouncing along like Tigger (you really had to be there!)  and before long she relaxed and actually started smiling as she came down the slope!  She realised that without mentioning anything to do with technique, her skiing automatically changed.

How can this happen?  I explained that our bodies know how to balance, how to change direction.  As a racquet ball player she understood as I asked her if she has to think about running, or stopping or changing direction to reach a shot?  Of course not, she said.  And so it is with skiing.  Yes we need to have the basics under our belt but if you are in a panicky or frightened state, technique flies out of the window.

As the time passed I was aware that our session was nearing it’s end I gave her one final tip and then simply said ‘This is going to be your best run yet’.  The difference was AMAZING!  When she reached the bottom, smiling and whooping I asked what had made the difference?  ’Well’ she said, ‘All the way down I was thinking  ’I wonder why this is going to be my best run?’  And because of that thought – it was!

You see, you can only think one thought at a time.  And the thoughts we think create our actions which determine our results.  The thought I had unconsciously planted in her head was that she was going to have her best run yet, words which she repeated over in her mind as she skied joyfully down the slope!

I know that for many people this sounds just too simple to be true – but take it from me, my client and her now VERY happy family – SIMPLE REALLY WORKS!

Constant and Never Ending Improvement!

Constant and Never Ending Improvement!

I’ve just returned from a week of skiing in Tignes – huge fun, great snow & wonderful company.

Now I have a goal to continually improve my skiing, even though many people assume that ‘at my age’ this isn’t something to focus on!   And sure enough… this year my skiing was better than ever!  I can ski anything the piste throws at me but this year I voluntarily did a lot of skiing off piste.  Now in Tignes that doesn’t necessarily mean heading off the beaten track, especially with the fresh snowfall we had during the week.  A foot of powder was easily accessible between the pistes, especially around the Grand Pre area.  I was even confident enough to encourage the others in my group to give it a go.

I don’t ski between seasons and last year only managed to get 11 days on the white stuff.  So what made the difference this year?

Well, I put it down to the fact that even at the ‘grand old age’ of 56 I was fitter this year than ever before!  I had spent the past 6 months really focussing on getting my body into shape.  As well as losing nearly 3 stone in weight (!) I really worked hard on my core and cardiovascular fitness.

Now I love the treadmill, but after reading up on the latest research and trends, I knew that interval training was the way to go.  And so I did.  Using a combination of speed sprints and hill sprints, I managed to really improve my fitness whilst at the same tim

e shortened the time I spent in the gym.  A definite win win!kettlebells

For my core and overall strength and fitness I went out & bought myself my NBF, a kettle bell   It didn’t take me long to completely fall in love with the thing!  I developed a few simple routines that once again took only 30 minutes max out of my day – and guess what?  I lost 9 inches from my waist!

But the biggest thrill for me was to ski hard, all day, every day, with NO aches and pains or breathlessness.  I didn’t even notice the altitude!

Now you know that I’m all about confident skiing and that most of your confidence comes from within but the added confidence that comes with knowing your body is fit and perfectly capable of doing everything you ask of it will make a MASSIVE difference for you too.

Please feel free to email me if you’d like more info about any of the fitness training I did.
